đź’§ Finding God in the Middle of Change

By Tammy Rae – The Midlife Well

Change isn’t easy.
Even when it’s something we chose—a new home, a new career path, or a fresh start—it still comes with disruption. And when it’s something we didn’t choose—loss, divorce, health struggles, children leaving home—the weight feels even heavier.

Midlife often ushers in more change than we ever expected.
And sometimes, in the swirl of it all, it can feel like God has gone quiet.

🕊️ The God Who Meets Us at the Well

The Samaritan woman in John 4 wasn’t looking for change. She went to the well with the same jar, in the same routine, carrying the same shame she always had.

But Jesus was waiting.

He didn’t meet her after her life was sorted out. He met her in the middle—midday, mid-shame, mid-chaos.

That’s how He meets us, too.

Not when everything is settled. Not when the transition is behind us. But right here, in the middle of the hard, holy shift.

🌿 Change Feels Like Loss Before It Feels Like Growth

If you’re in a season of change, you may feel:

  • Untethered—like you’ve lost your footing.

  • Unseen—like no one else understands this transition.

  • Unsure—like you don’t know which way is forward.

That’s normal. Change requires letting go before you can receive. It feels like loss before it feels like growth.

But even in the letting go, God’s hands are steady under yours.

đź’§ Three Ways to Find God in the Middle of Change

1. Pause Instead of Rushing

We want to fast-forward to stability. But God does His deepest work in the pause. Sit with Him. Let the silence be holy.

2. Look for Living Water, Not Just Old Jars

The Samaritan woman brought her jar for temporary water. Jesus offered eternal refreshment. Ask yourself: Am I clinging to old jars (comfort, control, roles, routines), or am I open to living water?

3. Anchor in God’s Promises

When life feels like it’s shifting beneath you, stand on what doesn’t change:

  • “For I the Lord do not change.” – Malachi 3:6

  • “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” – Hebrews 13:8

đź«— A Prayer for the Woman in Transition

Lord, I don’t know what this change is going to look like. I feel unsteady, uncertain, and sometimes afraid. But I know You are constant. Meet me here, in the middle. Remind me that You are my Living Water when everything else feels dry. Give me courage to release what was, and hope to embrace what is coming. Amen.

🌸 Final Thought

Change is not evidence that God has abandoned you.
It’s often the place where He reveals Himself most clearly.

The woman at the well walked away changed—because she met the One who never does.

And you can too.
