Part 1: Matthew 3 — Prepared by the Spirit: John and the Baptism of Jesus
As we continue our journey through Matthew, we come to John the Baptist, the man sent to prepare the way for Jesus. John’s message is clear, bold, and simple: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” (Matthew 3:2 NKJV).
In a world that was messy, complicated, and filled with distraction — much like ours today — John’s call was urgent. His life was a mirror of preparation, pointing people to the one who would fulfill God’s ultimate plan.
Even Jesus, who was perfect and without sin, came to John for baptism. He didn’t need repentance, but He obeyed the Father’s plan, fulfilling all righteousness and setting an example for us. There is a profound lesson here for midlife: preparation matters. Before stepping fully into God’s calling, our hearts must be ready, our minds aligned, and our spirits open to His guidance.
Reflection: Preparing Our Hearts
How ready is your heart to receive God’s work in your life?
Are there areas that need repentance, release, or realignment?
How does obedience open the door for God’s blessings and purpose?
Application for Midlife
In midlife, we sometimes feel like we’re beyond “preparation” or that it’s too late to start something new. John reminds us that preparation is a lifelong process. God uses every season, every trial, and every lesson to ready us for the next step of His plan.
Ask yourself:
What is God asking me to prepare for this week, this month, or this season?
What small, obedient step can I take toward aligning my life with His purpose?
